    Angel Gabriel

It is less common for angels to appear alone in pictorial representations. This painting of Angel Gabriel in the 16th century style, may be considered an exception. It shows an Angel in a long red robe, with a rounded neckline , over which a decorated fringed tunicle is worn. The cloak falls in elegant folds supported by the arms and with the hands crossed in front. The large wings of coloured feathers are unlike those associated with Angel Gabriel, who is always shown in pictures of association.

    Arch Mural (AMS)

The image seen here is a tiny glimpse of the grandeur of the 17th century Churches of Goa. The corner captured, has details from the base of murals seen on the Arch, the Sgraffito design and Azulejos tiles that covered the wall and interiors of the Church of Santa Monica. The murals on the Arch were discovered under a layer of lime wash during the restoration of the Church in 2011. Sgraffito is a technique of wall art decoration where a design is scratched out on on a wet lime plastered wall and then exposed surface is filled in with a paste of red soil, charcoal and a binding agent to render it red in colour. Azulejos are glazed ceramic tiles, generally blue and white in colour.
