Sgraffito and Pulpit

These details are found in the Arch and the pulpit of the Church of Santa Monica, Old Goa. Sgraffito is a technique of wall art decoration where a design is scratched out on on a wet lime plastered wall and then exposed surface is filled in with a paste of red soil, charcoal and a binding agent to render it red in colour. Unlike most pulpits with wooden carvings, this pulpit made of stone, has a mural around it with floral and geometric designs. The original pigments used were pink (derived by mixing red ochre and lime), black (organic black) and gilding (using gold leaf).
