Holy Martyrs of Morocco

Holy Martyrs of Morocco

700.00

This painting is of five Franciscan missionaries sent by Saint Francis of Assisi to Morocco, who were beheaded while attempting to convert the Caliph. The depiction of the Martyrs as already basking in the glory of their sacrifice is symbolized by the cross borne by each of them and presented to a richly dressed female penitent, who kneels before a domestic oratory in which a crucifix, open prayer book and skull are visible well known symbols used in the 17th century Vanitas paintings. The painting has an inscription at the bottom whose text helps identify the subject.
